The Proper Use of Cat ToysThere are many safety considerations that you should be aware of concerning your cat's toys. The level of importance is somewhat dependent upon your cat's activity level, personal preference, and size. However, simple safety tips can ensure your cat's excitement or enthusiasm... and health.~~ BOOKMARK AND PRINT THIS PAGE ~~
You will want to choose an active toy, a catnip toy, and a comfort toy for your cat. These will also need to be rotated weekly to make them last. Make only four or five toys available to your cat at a time. If your cat has a favorite toy, you should probably leave that one out at all times to keep your cat on your good side. Active toys can consist of round plastic shower curtain rings. These can either be played with single or linked together. Plastic rolling balls, with or without bells inside, are always cat favorites. Make sure they aren't small enough to ingest. Paper bags with the handles removed can be enticing to her. They are good for pouncing and hiding. They are also a good distraction for the cat. Plastic bags are NOT a good idea, as cats can suffocate when playing or chewing on the bag. Catnip filled toys are fun to rub on, carry, and kick around. Most catnip sprays rarely have enough power to attract cats. Not all cats are attracted to catnip, while some may become over stimulated or slightly sedated. Catnip seems to have no effect whatsoever on cats less than six months of age. Until you know how your cat will react, keep a close watch on the cat for the first hour or so after playing with catnip filled toys. Comfort toys can be stuffed animals (remember to remove any dangerous items before giving them to your pet). They can be small enough to carry around if it's their "baby" or if they like to attack, they should be the same size as the cat. Toys with tails on them seem to be attractive to the cat. Cardboard boxes are also comfort toys, especially boxes that are almost a little bit too small for the cat to get into - it makes them feel safe. Oh, and know that it is okay to save money and find your own toys around the house, which can be just as fun. Just follow the details and guidelines for making it a safe and fun toy for your best friend. |
