Even the most diehard cat lover is well aware that cats can run the entire gamut of behavioral problems. Some of the top feline behavior issues include scratching in unwanted place and 'spraying.' Both of these behaviors can be extremely destructive and can sometimes force one to contemplate difficult 'alternative housing' options.
One of the best tools for avoiding long-term difficult cat behavior problems is patience. With consistent behavior modification almost any cat will learn the "dos and don'ts" of the household. For example, for scratching, many cats will respond well to the "replacement" technique.
The whole theory of the replacement technique is to simply replace the undesirable scratching object, e.g. your sofa arm, with a desirable scratching object, e.g. a scratching post. By utilizing simple positive reinforcement most cats will learn quickly where they can scratch. Positive reinforcement can mean a "kitty treat" every time your feline friend scratches the correct object. "Adversives" can also be a great way to gently modify your cat's behavior. If apply sticky tape to your sofa arm, for example, your cat will be much less inclined to scratch there.
